Is there such a thing as too much urea?

While Urea is an excellent ingredient for hydrating and softening dry skin, too much of it in a cream can actually cause irritation. High concentrations of Urea can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, leading to redness, stinging, or even peeling, especially for those with sensitive skin. Overuse may also make the skin more vulnerable to environmental stressors and increase the risk of dryness if the balance of moisture is thrown off. For best results, Urea should be used at appropriate levels that support skin health without overwhelming it.

2–10% Urea – Generally safe for everyday moisturizers. This range hydrates, softens, and helps maintain the skin barrier.

10–20% Urea – Often used in foot creams or for rough, dry patches. It’s stronger but still usually safe for most people, though it can cause mild stinging on sensitive or broken skin.

Above 20–40% Urea – Considered a keratolytic (exfoliating) level. These creams are typically used to treat thickened skin, calluses, or conditions like psoriasis, and should usually be used under medical guidance.

Over 40% Urea – Very strong, prescription-strength concentrations. These are generally not for cosmetic use and may cause irritation or damage if used incorrectly.

So, anything above 20% is often “too much” for daily skincare unless specifically recommended by a dermatologist for a skin condition.

So, what is a better alternative to your calloused heels?

Foot files and pumice stones are excellent natural alternatives to acidic creams for managing hard, calloused feet. When used regularly, they gently buff away layers of thickened skin without relying on strong chemical exfoliants that may cause irritation. By softening rough spots through light, consistent filing, they help improve skin texture and comfort while allowing moisturizing creams to absorb more effectively. Unlike acids, which can sometimes over-exfoliate, foot files and pumice stones give you more control over the process, making them a safe and effective option for keeping feet smooth and healthy.

Another must for good foot health is Nordic Care Sea Salt Foot Scrub, a great choice for keeping feet smooth, refreshed, and healthy. Its natural sea salt crystals gently exfoliate rough, dry skin, removing calluses and buildup while stimulating circulation. Enriched with moisturizing ingredients, it not only polishes away impurities but also helps soften and hydrate, leaving feet feeling renewed and revitalized. Regular use promotes softer heels, smoother soles, and overall healthier-looking feet, making it an essential step in any foot care routine.
